WARRENSBURG, Mo. – A season high five errors came back to haunt Northeastern State in the second day of the MIAA Baseball Tournament late Friday evening. The RiverHawks would fall 13-3 to Pittsburg State and will set up an elimination game on Saturday afternoon with rivals Central Oklahoma.
Early morning showers forced a delay in the start of the tournament with a first pitch for NSU coming at 9:10 p.m.
After giving up a run in the opening frame,
Alex Massie evened the game back up in the bottom half of the inning with a triple to the left center field wall.
The Gorillas in the second took advantage of a pair of two out NSU errors to plate four runs, taking a 5-1 advantage on the RiverHawks
Pitt State added a run in the third and after a pair of scoreless frames they hit a two-out three run homer to right to go up 9-1.
In the seventh, Pitt State scored their tenth run on a wild pitch before
Conner Reynolds hit a pitch-hit two run homer in the eighth to make the score 10-3.
The Gorillas continued to pour on the runs in the ninth, plating three on two hits, and an error.
Northeastern State was limited to five hits, while Pitt State (33-17) drew seven walks, with 12 hits on the RiverHawks' pitching staff.
Jonathan Smithey (2-3) went 2 1/3 innings in the start for NSU who falls to 28-23 for the season.
First pitch on Saturday against the Bronchos is projected for 4 p.m.
