RiverHawks down Griffons 2-1

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Northeastern State Women's Soccer team picked up their fourth consecituve win on Friday night, beating Missouri Western 2-1. NSU improves to 9-3-1 this season, with a 3-2 record in MIAA action. Missouri Western falls to 4-7-2, with a record of 1-4-1 in conference play.

It was the Griffons getting on the board first, as in the 31st minute Kelsey Roe got loose on a breakaway and scored. NSU's Livy Wagner responded in the 42nd minute to send the match into halftime all tied up. In the second half it was NSU scoring again, this time off the right foot of Mariah Nicolet, who took a pass from Sommer Franks and put it over the Griffons' goalkeeper. That would prove to be enough, as the RiverHawks held off a late rally from the Griffons, including a shot with 15 seconds left that sailed left of the net.

The RiverHawks recorded 17 shots on the night, with eight shots on goal. Nicolet led the way with three shots, two of which were on goal. NSU had seven corner kicks in the match compared to just four from the Griffons.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they face Northwest Missouri. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
