RiverHawks fall in MIAA Championship to Bronchos

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Inside four minutes away from winning their first MIAA Tournament, a header by rivals Central Oklahoma gave them enough life Sunday to snatch the title away from NSU in PKs.

Tied at one after 110 minutes, the Bronchos won the shootout 3-1 for their second straight tournament title.  The win will give UCO an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.  Northeastern State will wait until Monday evening at 5 p.m. to see if their name will be called for the first time in program history.

It was scoreless in the 72nd minute when Mariah Nicolet took a pass from Paulina Chavez and blasted it past the Bronchos goalkeeper for her 13th goal of the season.

The Bronchos had plenty of scoring chances in the final 20 minutes, and they finally converted in the 85th minute when Kelsey Gordon took a pass from Kelsie Eason and put it in the back of the net to send the match to overtime.

Neither team was able to score in either of the overtime periods, sending the match to a penalty shootout. For the RiverHawks, it was their second consecutive match to go to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Central Okla. won 3-1, with Paulina Chavez scoring the lone RiverHawks goal.

NSU netted a total of four shots on goal, with Nicolet, Paige LorenzoLivy Wagner and Jaylehn Maples getting shots on goal. The Bronchos had just two shots on goal.

The RiverHawks are for 14-4-3 this season.  Fans can watch the selection show on NCAA.com at no charge.
