TAHLEQUAH -- The Northeastern State finished the regular season with a 2-0 win over Newman on Sunday afternoon at DeLoache Field. The win gives NSU a final record of 13-4-1, with an 8-3-0 mark in MIAA action. The Jets will finish the season at 7-4-6, with a 3-3-4 MIAA record.
The first goal for the RiverHawks came in the 29th minute when
Meagan Chase took a shot that was blocked by a Newman defender, but the ball bounced right to
Paulina Chavez, who put the ball in the net to give NSU a 1-0 lead. They added a second in the 57th minute when
Mariah Nicolet got loose and beat the Newman goalie in the lower-left corner of the net.Â
Those two goals were more than enough for the RiverHawks, as
Ainsley Cunningham made two saves on the afternoon to pick up her second shutout of the season. Chavez, Chase and
Paige Lorenzo all had two shots on goal for the RiverHawks, who had nine shots on goal as a team.
The win puts the RiverHawks in the MIAA Tournament for an eighth consecutive season. They will host Newman on Friday at DeLoache Field, with the time being announced later this week.Â
