TOPEKA, Kan. – Northeastern State had three in double-figures but a fourth-quarter run by Washburn downed the RiverHawks, 73-60, on Thursday evening in Lee Arena.
Joi Bertrand surpassed her career high by one with six blocks and was tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points. The six blocks brought the senior to 60 for the season and surpassed former Lady Reds player, Gaile Cook, (1989-90) by one for the top spot in program history.
Cailyn Long also had 18 points and matched her season-high with four made three-pointers.
Cenia Hayes had 16 along with seven rebounds and four steals.
The RiverHawks led through the first quarter and were within five of the Ichabods through the 30 minutes of play. With a minute left in the third period, NSU took a 46-45 lead following a short run of four unanswered points from Hayes.
Washburn (16-7, 11-3 MIAA) followed up and scored 12 unanswered points in-between the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter. Northeastern State would not recover in the period where Washburn shot a game-high 53.3-percent (8-15) in the final ten minutes.
The Ichabods controlled the posts with 42 of their points coming from inside the paint and on second chance points, they out-scored NSU 17-to-4. Washburn finished the evening out-rebounding NSU by 16 with 52 and having three players with more than ten.
Thursday's loss drops the RiverHawks to 6-17 and 3-11 in the MIAA.
TIP-INS
Bailee Eldred finished the evening with six points and is now eight away from 1,000 in her career … Bertrand's six blocks are tied for the second most this season in the MIAA … Hayes passed the halfway mark to 1,000 points on Thursday and has 513 in two seasons at NSU.
