TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- The Northeastern State pitching staff allowed just three hits and struck out a season-high 18 batters in a 7-1 victory over UA-Fort Smith at Thomas C. Rousey Field here Tuesday.
The RiverHawks winning streaks move to five games and improves 8-21 on the year.
NSU took control of the game in the first inning thanks to Lions miscues. Â Three walks, two passed balls, wild pitch, fielding error led to five RiverHawks runs and a 5-0 lead.
Northeastern State sent six different pitchers to the mound with
John Rains getting his first start of the year. Â Rains went two innings allowing no hits and fanned six Lions batters.
Trevor Nance (1-1) went three innings with six strikeouts to get his first win of the year. The 18 strikeouts were not only a team high but matched the season high in the MIAA.
Colton Burgess and
Colton Wright led the RiverHawks at the plate. Â Wright went 2-4 with a 2 RBI double in the first inning and Burgess was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Alex Massie,
Jaxon Phipps, and Burgess picked up hits in the seventh inning that led to two more runs and a 7-1 victory.
The RiverHawks will return to MIAA action this weekend as Southwest Baptist comes in for a three-game series. Â Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 29. Â First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Rousey Field.
