RiverHawks strikeout 18 in 7-1 in over UA-Fort Smith

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- The Northeastern State pitching staff allowed just three hits and struck out a season-high 18 batters in a 7-1 victory over UA-Fort Smith at Thomas C. Rousey Field here Tuesday.

The RiverHawks winning streaks move to five games and improves 8-21 on the year.

NSU took control of the game in the first inning thanks to Lions miscues.  Three walks, two passed balls, wild pitch, fielding error led to five RiverHawks runs and a 5-0 lead.

Northeastern State sent six different pitchers to the mound with John Rains getting his first start of the year.  Rains went two innings allowing no hits and fanned six Lions batters.

Trevor Nance (1-1) went three innings with six strikeouts to get his first win of the year. The 18 strikeouts were not only a team high but matched the season high in the MIAA.

Colton Burgess and Colton Wright led the RiverHawks at the plate.  Wright went 2-4 with a 2 RBI double in the first inning and Burgess was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Alex Massie, Jaxon Phipps, and Burgess picked up hits in the seventh inning that led to two more runs and a 7-1 victory.

The RiverHawks will return to MIAA action this weekend as Southwest Baptist comes in for a three-game series.  Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 29.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Rousey Field.
