TAHLEQUAH, Ok. --- Northeastern State's
Colton Burgess was 2-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBI as the RiverHawks fell 11-7 to Northwestern Oklahoma State in a mid-week tilt at Thomas C Rousey Field here Wednesday.
The RiverHawks fall to 2-16 on the year.
NSU jumped out on the Rangers early on, leadoff hitter
Blake Freeman singled to open the first inning and
Erick Espinosa reached on a throwing error. Â Burgess cleared the bases with his third home run of the year giving the RiverHawks a 3-0 lead. Â
Northeastern State piled on more runs in the second inning,
Brad Chronister walked, Freeman doubled to right center plating Chronister for a 4-1 lead. Â
Wes O'Neill singled home two more pushing the RiverHawks lead to 6-1 after two innings of play.
With a conference series looming, the RiverHawks used a different pitcher each inning. The Rangers took control of the game plating three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.
NSU trimmed the lead to 8-7 in the fifth inning, Burgess singled and scored on a
Zack Henderson double. Northwestern Oklahoma State extended its lead with a run in sixth, seventh and ninth innings to capture the 11-7 victory.
The RiverHawks sent 10 pitchers to the mound, with
Lee Callison(0-2) getting the loss.
Mother Nature has once again played havoc with the spring sports schedule. The RiverHawks were scheduled to make the trip to Missouri Western this weekend. But that series will be played in Tahlequah with a doubleheader on March 7 beginning at 11:00 am.
