CLAREMORE, Ok. ----
Wes O'Neill picked up two hits and drove in a run and
Alex Massie extended his hitting streak to 10 games as the RiverHawks fell 3-2 to Rogers State in a mid-week tilt at the Diamond Sports Complex here Wednesday.
The loss drops NSU to 11-32 on the year.
Northeastern State has made a habit of playing close games this season, 10 games have been decided by two runs or less. Unfortunately, the RiverHawks are 3-7 in those games.
The Hillcats pitching staff limited the RiverHawks hitless through five innings and only four hits on the afternoon. Three of the four NSU hits were for extra bases. O'Neill, Massie and
Jaxon Phipps all doubled. Massie has now reached base in 19 consecutive games and hit safely in 10 straight.
Rogers State carried a 2-0 into the sixth inning when the RiverHawks offense came alive. Massie opened the sixth with a double. O'Neill followed with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
The momentum did not last long for the RiverHawks, as RSU plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at 3-2 and hold on for the win.
Northeastern State sent eight different pitchers to the mound with
Bryce Hestand picking up the loss.
The RiverHawks will return to MIAA action this weekend as Emporia State will visit Thomas C. Rousey Field in the final homestand of the 2019 season.
