JOPLIN, Mo. – Northeastern State kept their season alive on Saturday thanks to a pair of come-from-behind wins at Missouri Southern. The RiverHawks took the opener 7-3 and won the nightcap 4-3 over the Lions.
Northeastern State will make their fifth appearance in the MIAA Tournament, which will be held at Central Oklahoma this coming Wednesday, May 1.
Northeastern State concluded their regular season with a 26-25 overall record and 14-12 mark in the MIAA.
The RiverHawks will face top-seeded Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m.
Addie Elbon homered, and
Cameron Conrad had a three-RBI day at the plate.
Gail Young won in the circle in both contests to send her season record to 17-11. The 17 wins this season is tied for second-most in the season at NSU.
In the opener, Southern jumped ahead during the third with a solo homer and a two-RBI single.
NSU grabbed two runs back with on an Acrey sac fly and a
Kelsey Harmon single through the right side.
A pair of Southern (19-25, 10-16 MIAA) errors aided NSU in the sixth.
Randi Castillo tied the game with a pinch-hit RBI single, and
Cameron Conrad had an RBI single up the middle to go up 4-3 on the Lions.
Elbon gave NSU an insurance run in the seventh on a homer to left field. Acrey later added another run on double, and Harmon brought in NSU's seven-run on an outfield single.
The RiverHawks had 11 hits with
Sierra Crick and Harmon both with two. Young struck out six in the complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, Elbon tripled in the opening frame to give NSU an early 1-0 lead on the Lions.
Two scoreless innings passed before Southern collected a two-out two-RBI triple to jump ahead of NSU. They added one more on an RBI double to left field to go up 3-1 on the RiverHawks.
The RiverHawks loaded the bases in the sixth for Conrad who singled to center on the second pitch she saw to tie the game at 3-3.
In the seventh,
Madison Boyd led the frame off by reaching on an error. NSU would manage to load the bases again for Acrey who hit a sac fly on a 1-2 count to center. Boyd scored on the play as the eventual winning run.
Sydney Balderrama started the game and tossed four innings, Young finished the game and was credited with the win.
