WICHITA, Kan. -- A second-half goal from
Paulina Chavez was the difference maker for the RiverHawks Women's Soccer team Friday night as they beat the Newman Jets 3-2 in their final nonconference match.
NSU is now 5-1-1 on the season while Newman is 4-1-2.
The RiverHawks and Jets exchanged goals for the majority of the match, starting in the second minute when
Hannah Stettler put NSU up 1-0. Newman responded in the 29th minute to make it 1-1, which was the score at halftime.
NSU took the lead in the 54th minute thanks to
Sommer Franks, who took a pass from Stettler and found the upper-left corner of the net. Again though Newman responded just five minutes later to even things up, leading to the game-winning goal by Chavez in the 74th minute.
The RiverHawks recorded nine shots on the night, with seven on goal. Chavez led the team with two shots while
Ainsley Cunningham made two saves in net.
The RiverHawks will open MIAA play on Sunday afternoon against Central Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
