Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith and Thompson lead NSU with 20-point efforts in 76-65 loss at No. 2 Northwest

MARYVILLE, Mo. – A shorthanded NSU squad and 14 three-pointers by No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri handed the RiverHawks a 76-65 loss Saturday inside Bearcat Arena.

Playing without Brad Davis and Aaron Givens, the RiverHawks played with a new starting lineup for the first time this season.

Despite the limited lineup, the RiverHawks played Northwest to its closest margin of victory this season on their home court, where they have won now 24 straight times.

Kendrick Thompson led the RiverHawks with 24 points after taking a Mark Downey era high 25 shots for his second 20-point performance. Caleb Smith put up 22 for his tenth career night with at least 20 on the stat line. Troy Locke paced then NSU bench with 11, which was two short of his career-high in a Northeastern uniform.

The RiverHawks stuck with the Bearcats through the first ten minutes of a contest, but a 13-2 run by Northwest that was aided by three treys set NSU back 24-11 with under seven remaining.  Northwest dropped nine three-pointers on NSU by the intermission with the RiverHawks trailing them 38-25. Thompson led Northeastern State with 12 points and landed a pair of treys.

Using a 9-2 run in the second half, NSU trimmed down the Bearcat lead down to 46-42 with under 14 minutes to go force Northwest to spend a timeout.  The Bearcats came out of the break launching three straight treys to extend their lead by out to double-digits. Northeastern State could not get inside of a three-possession lead by the Bearcats the rest of the way.

Northeastern State shot 40.3-percent from the field on 27-for-67 shooting and out-rebounded the Bearcats by with one with 35. Josh Ihek led the team with eight. In the turnover battle, NSU forced 16 on the Bearcats, which was a season-high for a squad who held the lowest mark in the nation in miscues.

The loss drops the RiverHawks to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Northwest will improve to 12-1 and 2-1 in league action.

Northeastern State remains on the road and will face Missouri Western on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
