TAHLEQUAH -- The RiverHawks Baseball team went from down 11-0 to having the winning run at the plate on Tuesday, but the late rally wasn't enough to beat Southeastern Oklahoma.
The Basics
Score: Southeastern Oklahoma 12, Northeastern State 9
Records: Southeastern Oklahoma 12-11 (4-8), Northeastern State 9-11 (3-3)
NSU Pitcher of Record:
Cal Howard (1-1)
How it Happened
The Savage Storm raced to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first, one in the third and five in the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead over the RiverHawks.
In the bottom of the seventh, everything changed for a NSU offense that had just four hits, as they exploded to hang six runs on Southeastern Oklahoma. Everything started when
Justin Murphey drew a leadoff walk. After
Conner West reached on a fielder's choice and
Reid Fehr grounded out, West advanced to third on a passed ball.
Collin Klingensmith then drew a walk, putting runners on the corner for
Jaxon Phipps, who ripped a single to center field, scoring West and getting NSU on the board. The RiverHawks offense kept going, as the next four batters all reached base, including a bases-loaded double off the bat of
Michael Conn that cut the Savage Storm lead to just five.
After both teams scored a run in the eighth, NSU came to the plate in the ninth looking to steal a win from Southeastern Okla.
Chaz Orr drew a leadoff walk, before stealing second with
Wes O'Neill at the plate. After Conn singled to right field, Murphey drew a walk, which started a streak of three straight RiverHawks drawing walks. Unfortunately, NSU was unable to finish the job, as the Savage Storm recovered to get the final two outs of the game.
