The Setup

  • Northeastern State plays a rare Monday afternoon game to close out the 2021 calendar year at Washburn. The RiverHawks will be looking for their first road MIAA win of the season and first road win since Nov. 20 at Oklahoma Christian.

Last Time Out

  • Northeastern State had a forgettable visit to Emporia State, falling 89-61 to the Hornets.
  • Christian Cook had his fourth 20-point game with a team-high 22-points. Emeka Obukwelu recorded 12 for his eighth consecutive double-digit game.
  • The RiverHawks trailed as many as 49 points in the second half.
  • NSU committed a season-high 21 turnovers, with the Hornets blocking 13 shots on the RiverHawks. 

Storylines

  • Emeka Obukwelu has scored at least ten points in the last eight games, averaging just about a double-double per game, and is fourth overall in the MIAA, averaging 17.9 points per game.  The graduate student holds the sixth-largest points outing this season in the MIAA with 31 against Arlington Baptist and the highest rebounds in a game at 20 against Ozarks (Ark.).
  • Rashad Perkins has turned into one of the top scoring threats in the MIAA off the bench this season, averaging 13.5 points per game.  At Missouri Western, his 40 points were the most for an NSU men's basketball player since 2014 and tied for the most in the game this season in the MIAA.  Perkins is shooting 64.8-percent from the field and 54.2-percent from the arc, averaging 26.0 minutes per game this year.
  • Christian Cook has nine games this with at least ten points and has scored in double-figures in the last six games for NSU.    He has scored at least ten in 14 of the previous 15 contests, going back to last season. 
  • Tylor Arnold has two double-double games this season for NSU and is fourth in points (7.8), second in rebounding (6.0), and tied for third in overall assists (29). Arnold played for head coach Ja Havens for three seasons at East Central (Okla.) and was on the top-10 list for career minutes played, career steals, and career throw percentage.  
  • Northeastern State men's basketball set an attendance record during Thanksgiving break, with 2,231 fans attending their game against Haskell.  The number is good for the ninth-most in NCAA Division II basketball this season. 
  • The RiverHawks has made a three-pointer in 106 consecutive games.  Feb. 2, 2017 against Southwest Baptist is the last time NSU did not make a three going 0-16.
  • In October, Northeastern State was picked to finish in 13th place in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Polls.
  • The 2021-22 season is the 93rd for men's basketball at Northeastern State.
  • The RiverHawks are entering their tenth season as members of the MIAA and 25th season as an NCAA Division II program.

About Washburn

  • Washburn heads into Monday's matinee winners of their last two games.
  • In rebounding, the Ichabods are in the bottom 20 nationally with 31.5 per game and are -4.6 per game in rebounding margin. 
  • Limiting turnovers is a strength for Washburn, and they are at 10.7 per game, 28th nationally; in forcing turnovers, they average an MIAA best 16.4 per game. 
  • Tyler Geiman, a returning All-American for Washburn, is third among active NCAA Division II men's basketball players with 574 assists. He has scored 1,413 points in his career as an Ichabod.  An early-season injury has limited him four games, playing in the last three heading into Monday's meeting with NSU.    Geiman has averaged 7.5 points per game but leads the team in assist average at 5.5 per game. 
  • Jalen Lewis, the 2021 MIAA Tournament MVP, has led Washburn in scoring this season with 15.4 points per game and has a pair of 30 point games against two Oklahoma Schools (Oklahoma Baptist and Central Oklahoma).

Last Time They Met

  • Playing their third game in four days, Northeastern State made an early surge in the first half but fell flat, dropping an 88-73 contest at #15 Washburn.
  • The Ichabods used a combined 19 unanswered point run in the final seven minutes of the first half to down the RiverHawks in the late season makeup game. 
  • The RiverHawks shot 40.3-percent from the field (25-62).

Series Notes

  • Northeastern State has lost four straight inside Lee Arena.
  • First December meeting between the two programs.
  • Northeastern State has averaged 76.2 points in 17 contests with the Ichabods.
  • First meeting was during the 2003 NCAA South Central Regional, NSU would win that contest 64-59 during their run to the National Championship that season.
