TULSA -- Northeastern State won doubles, but they would be edged 4-3 by Southeastern Oklahoma in non-conference action Friday.
Played outdoors, the match was delayed for three hours due to mist.
The RiverHawks would get a 7-6 tiebreaker win on court-two in doubles from
Belinda Jayaprakash and
Melissa Vera to take the early advantage over Southeastern.
"I thought that from a tactical standpoint, our doubles was pretty good today. They've really bought in to the movement and court positioning we've been talking about in practice, and it paid off today," said head coach
Tim McLane.
In singles, the Savage Storm (3-0) quickly won the bottom two courts and never trailed again, getting the match point on court three.
Melissa Vera won on court two in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 7-6) and
Chiara Carnelutti rallied back on court four (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
"We learned a very valuable lesson today, and that's that you have to maintain your energy and focus for the duration of the match. And full credit to Southeastern. They took advantage of the lull we went through before we got back on track. We did a great job of fighting back towards the end of the match and were able to pick up a couple of nice singles wins, but it was just a little too late today. But, given the amount of practice time we've missed, it's nice to see that we are headed in the right direction."
Northeastern State falls to 0-2 and returns home to host Oklahoma Baptist on March 4.
