Bats come alive, baseball beats Washburn 13-6

TOPEKA, Kansas – Head coach Jake Hendrick earned his first win at Washburn in a 13-6 win Saturday afternoon. The RiverHawks used nine pitchers to hold the Ichabods at bay and once the bats came alive in the sixth NSU scored three-plus in each frame. The RiverHawks won the single game of the three-game series for the first time this season and are riding the best start ever in MIAA play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team scored until the fifth inning. Washburn struck for four runs in the bottom half on three hits and one error.
 
In the top of the sixth Jaxon Phipps and Tucker Dunlap got aboard before Reid Fehr, a Topeka native, hit a high fly ball over the left field fence to cut the lead.
 
Washburn added to their lead on a two-RBI double in the bottom half, which was the last time they pushed runs across.
 
NSU had six batters reach in a row in the seventh to knot the game at six runs apiece. NSU's Chaz Orr and Fehr each singled to drive in runs with the bases loaded.
 
With the bases loaded in the eighth, Dunlap lined a ball that died in the wind to left field to drive in three. NSU took a 9-6 lead and didn't look back.
 
The RiverHawks pushed four across in the top of the ninth on five hits including four in succession.
 
INSIDE THE BOX

UP NEXT
The RiverHawks remain in Topeka to play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. NSU has won all three of its doubleheaders this season. Nic Swanson, who leads the nation in starter ERA, will be on the mound for the second game of the day.
