RiverHawks edge Aggies, 4-3

LAWTON -- Northeastern State snapped a six-match home winning streak for Cameron by edging the Aggies 4-3 Saturday.

Maria Popova was the hero of the match for the RiverHawks, winning 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) in her number-two singles contest to give NSU the decisive match win.

"We had to fight tooth and nail against a really good Cameron team," said head coach Tim McLane.  "We played hungry in doubles and fought the whole time, and that's the kind of effort it takes to win against good teams."

Northeastern State needed a tiebreaker for the doubles point, with Belinda Jayaprakash and Maria Popova edging their Cameron counterparts 7-6 (5) on court three.  Vera Carvalho and Melissa Vera were first off the court, winning 6-4 in 2s.

Vera Carvalho gave NSU its second point and was off the court first in 5s with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Cameron countered with a win in six-singles before Melissa Vera won 6-3, 7-5 in 4s for their third match point.

The Aggies took courts three and one to even the match leaving Popova as the deciding point.

"It was was very tight, but I fought until the last ball, and you know everything came to my side, so I am very happy for my match," said Popova.

The RiverHawks picked up their fourth straight win over Cameron (7-3) and moved to 3-4 overall and will play again this afternoon against Seward CC at 2 p.m. in Lawton.
