Despite late charge, RiverHawks fall at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – A penalty kick goal in the 63rd minute by Fort Hays State proved to be enough to hold off a late charge by RiverHawks who fell 2-1 at Hays Friday evening.

The RiverHawks landed a PK goal from Flynn Semmerling in the final eight minutes but failed to find an equalizer on three corner kicks in the remaining time.

After 50 minutes of scoreless action, FHSU's Agustin Meza broke away and found the back of the net for the first tally of the game.

Blake Arndt's penalty kick got past NSU's keeper NiklasKirhoff through the lower left corner for the second score of the match. Arndt led all players with four shots on goal.

Semmerling's score came in the 83rd minute on a left-footed kick by the diving keeper into the upper right corner to cut the deficit in half. It was his 22nd career goal and second career PK goal.

NSU took two corner kicks in the last minute of the match but were unable to convert. The RiverHawks held a 5-3 advantage in the contest.

The Tigers out-shot the RiverHawks 21-8. NSU had just four shots on goal for the match, two of which coming from Semmerling.

Kirhoff played the full 90 minutes in net making four saves.

The teams remain in the second and third positions in the standings and may meet on April 10 in Hays for the opening round of the GAC Championship. With the setback, NSU moves to 3-2 in GAC play while Fort Hays State improves to 4-1.

NSU closes the regular season on April 3 at Doc Wadley Stadium. The RiverHawks will honor their three seniors before the 2 p.m. kickoff.
