Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ronan Khalsa

NSU wins fourth-straight match with 3-2 win over UCO

TAHLEQUAH – The RiverHawks tallied early in each half to grab the advantage and downed Central Oklahoma 3-2 Sunday afternoon to close the conference regular season.

With the win NSU women's soccer moves to 4-2 (4-1 in MIAA) while UCO falls to 6-4-1 (3-2 in MIAA). Both teams will await announcement of seeding and schedule for the playoffs that are set to begin next weekend.

Northeastern State took no time to score the first goal of the game. Senior Paulina Chavez found the back of the net off a throw in by Myka Heimbach in the 2nd minute of the match. She took it a few dribbles and rifled off a shot from 20 yards out that got by the keeper.

Central Oklahoma evened the score in the 18th minute on a breakaway that they got to go through the bottom right of the net from 15 yards out.

At halftime, UCO held a 12-4 shot advantage. In the second half, however, shots were even and NSU held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

Callie Rucker was tasked with taking a corner in the 48th minute which she delivered to Heimbach who headed it through the top left from 15 yards out.

UCO got a shot off in the 54th minute that goaltender Melanie Rice saved but the ball was jarred loose after a collision. Central Oklahoma was in the right place for another chance that they converted through the bottom right.

Chavez got ahead of the Bronchos defense and found a streaking Hayley Garcia for the third tally of the game in the 66th minute. The freshman fired it high and off the fingertips of the UCO goaltender who couldn't quite track down the ball before it crossed the plane.

The RiverHawks nearly took a two-goal advantage in the 77th minute on a Heimbach shot that deflected off the crossbar to Livy Wagner who headed it high over the net.

Rice made seven saves but did not need to after 64 minutes as the NSU defense stood strong. UCO led 18-10 in shots for the match.

Northeastern State advances to the Spring MIAA Playoffs and the opponents will be announced in the coming days. The RiverHawks have won their last four matches.
