TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State opens its 26th season of women's soccer Thursday, visiting Southwestern Oklahoma for the first time since 2010.  The match marks the beginning of the regular season for both teams, with head coach Chase Wooten entering his 12th season as head coach of the RiverHawks. 

What's with the time Thursday?
The early kickoff is due to Southwestern Oklahoma playing its football opener at 6 p.m.

Its been a bit
The RiverHawks didn't play an official season during the 2020-21 academic year, but if we were keeping track, the RiverHawks finished the season with four straight regular-season wins and lost in penalty kicks following a 3-3 draw to Missouri Western in the postseason. Northeastern State was picked to finish fourth in the MIAA and haven't played a countable contest since playing in the NCAA Central Region Tournament on Nov. 22, 2019

History with the 'Dawgs
Northeastern State and Southwestern Oklahoma have played soccer against each other since 1998 with the RiverHawks leading the series 8-5-1.  In Weatherford, Northeastern State is 5-2.  The last road win for NSU came under the Lady Reds banner, which was a 3-nil win on Oct. 26, 2008.  

Scouting the 'Dawgs 

  • Southwestern Oklahoma finished the spring 2021 season with a 4-4-1 record and was picked to finish third in the Great American Conference this fall, earning two first-place votes from coaches. 
  • Head Coach Mark Persson is in his 13th season at Southwestern Oklahoma and has faced the RiverHawks and a Wooten-led team twice in 2010 and 2011 and is 1-0-1 against Northeastern State.
  • Elizabeth Moreno is the reigning GAC Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead her team to four shutouts this last spring. 

History with the Tigers
The RiverHawks are 15-3-1 against OBU and 9-0-1 at home when facing the Tigers.  Northeastern State has won ten consecutive matches and has not allowed more than one goal in the last 11 meetings.  Of the 19 contests with Ouachita Baptist, Northeastern State has pitched a shutout in nine of them. 

Scouting the Tigers

  • OBU will be in action on Thursday afternoon hosting Texas Woman's before visiting NSU Sunday
  • After winning its spring tournament championship, the Tigers were picked to win the Great American Conference, holding an 8-3-1 record.
  • Most of the core group from their championship returns with 16 letterwinners coming back with seven starters returning to the pitch. 

Coming Up 
Northeastern State will be on the road heading to Southwest Baptist, Thursday for a non-conference contest.
