The Setup

  • The RiverHawks will play their ninth and final game in January at Missouri Southern looking to snap a six game Lions winning streak. 

Last Time Out

at Pittsburg State 71, Northeastern State 69  | January 27, 2022 | Pittsburg, Kan.
  • Pittsburg State hit a layup as time expired to end Northeastern State's night in a 71-69 heartbreak on Thursday evening.
  • Maleeah Langstaff recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 26 points and ten rebounds.  Ashton Hackler had 12 points and hit a game-tying three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left.
  • The RiverHawks out-shot Pitt State with 44.4-present on the floor (28-63) and out-rebounded them by eight with 40.   Zaria Collins came off the bench with eight boards and eight points. 
  • On NSU's final possession, while being double-teamed, Hackler landed a critical three-pointer with 2.9 left on the clock.  Pitt State quickly called a timeout to advance the ball to their side of the court, where they were able to get a layup on the right side of the bucket just before time expired. 

Storylines

  • Maleeah Langstaff is among the top-100 in the nation in 11 statistical categories this season and is third in the MIAA, shooting 53.1-percent from the field.  The senior is among the MIAA leaders with 6.6 defensive rebounds per game and second in the association with 9.6 rebounds per game.  This season, Langstaff has seven double-double games and is the only player in the MIAA with a triple-double.
  • Zaria Collins returned to the floor Thursday at Missouri Southern after missing three consecutive games due to injury.  Collins came off the bench and led the RiverHawks with eight rebounds. 
  • Morgan Lee leads the RiverHawks with 93 games played with 61 starts.  Against Bacone this season, Lee had a career-high seven steals, which is third-most in a game in the MIAA this season and tied for 12-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball.   Her twin-sister Maegan Lee is third on the NSU roster averaging 8.9 points per game this season.  The RiverHawks have a third Lee in true-freshman Courtney Lee, who is not related to the Lee Twins and has seen the floor in 17 games.
  • Ashton Hackler has started the last eight games and has scored at-least ten points in eight games during her true-freshman season. 
  • After missing the first six games due to injury, true-freshman Jaylee Kindred made her career debut at Northwest Missouri and her first start at Central Oklahoma.  Kailyn Lay started and made her NSU debut against Pittsburg State on Dec. 12; she is fourth in MIAA play with 4.1 assists per game. 
  • Northeastern State's 62 team rebounds against Bacone is an MIAA high tied for 17th-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball this season.
  • NSU has a 631 game streak of making at least one three-pointer.  Dec. 30, 1999, at Central Arkansas is the last time Northeastern State without making a trey.
  • The RiverHawks are entering their tenth season as members of the MIAA and 25th season as an NCAA Division II program.

About Missouri Southern

  • Following their win over NSU just two weeks ago, the Lions have become the hottest team in the MIAA, winning their last six games.  Last weekend they traveled to Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney and took wins over both top-25 programs.
  • True freshman Lacy Strokes leads the Lions on the floor with 16.8 points per game.  She is eighth nationally with 5.8 assists per game and leads the MIAA with 3.3 steals per game.  Madi Strokes, a fourth-year player for Southern with a member of the MIAA All-Defensive team last season, has 30 blocks with 7.0 rebounds per game during the current campaign.
  • Southern holds the MIAA's second-best three-point percentage at 34.7 and averages 7.9 per game.  They are 12th in the MIAA, averaging 17.4 fouls per game

  • Maleeah Langstaff led the RiverHawks with a then career-high 24 points
  • Northeastern State played catch-up for most of the game after shooting 15.8-percent in the second quarter.
  • After trailing 18-14 out of the opening quarter, Missouri Southern opened up the second stanza scoring 16 unanswered points pulling away by 20 with 2:35 left to the half.

  • The last January meeting in Joplin happened on the same date in 2020, with Northeastern State making its seventh January visit to play at Missouri Southern.

  • Northeastern State won its first eight home meetings with Southern.
