The Setup

  • The RiverHawks will play one final road game Saturday before opening a lengthy five game homestand.  Northeastern State has played nine of their 11 games this season away from Tahlequah.
  • One team will pick up its first MIAA victory of the season on Saturday, with Newman going 0-7 to start association play.  The RiverHawks have had five consecutive MIAA setbacks.

Last Time Out

Central Okla. 69, Northeastern State 52 | January 6, 2022 | Edmond, Okla.
  • A seven-minute scoreless run in the second quarter proved to be a difference-maker for the shorthanded RiverHawks Thursday in a 69-52 loss at Central Oklahoma. 
  • NSU was forced to play with its leading scorers and rebounders Maleeah Langstaff and Zaria Collins.
  • Without Langstaff and Collins rebounding hunted NSU, Central out-rebounded them by 20 (48-28) and out-scored them 21-to-7 on second-chance points. 
  • Maegan Lee led the RiverHawks in scoring with 14 points, Courtney Lee had a career-high 12 points off the bench, Ashton Hackler added ten.

Scheduling Switch

  • Due to COVID postponing two games for the RiverHawks three upcoming dates have been changed on the upcoming schedule.  NSU will host Nebraska-Kearney on Jan. 25 (was Jan. 3) and Fort Hays State on Feb. 7 (was Jan. 1).  The RiverHawks will play at Pitt State on Jan. 27, one day later than previously scheduled.

Storylines

  • Zaria Collins holds the MIAA's eighth highest-scoring average per game this season at 15.1 and has scored at least ten points in nine of the last 11 games.  The junior is ninth in the MIAA with 145 field-goal attempts. 
  • Maleeah Langstaff is among the top-100 in the nation in six statistical categories this season, and fourth in the MIAA shooting 51.8-percent from the field.  The senior is among the MIAA leaders with 7.0 defensive rebounds per game and third in the association with 9.9 rebounds per game.  Langstaff has four double-double games this season. 
  • Morgan Lee leads the RiverHawks with 89 games played with 56 starts.  Against Bacone this season, Lee had a career-high seven steals, which is third-most in a game in the MIAA this season and tied for 12-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball.   Her twin-sister Maegan Lee is third on the NSU roster averaging 9.8 points per game this season.  The RiverHawks have a third Lee in true-freshman Courtney Lee, who is not related to the Lee Twins and has seen the floor in eight games.
  • After missing the first six games due to injury, true-freshman Jaylee Kindred made her career debut at Northwest Missouri and her first start Central Oklahoma.  Kailyn Lay started and made her NSU debut against Pittsburg State on Dec. 12.
  • Jessica Barrow leads the RiverHawks with 16 made three-pointers and is shooting .397 from the arc, averaging 8.0points per game.
  • Northeastern State's 62 team rebounds against Bacone is an MIAA high tied for 15th-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball this season.
  • NSU has a 624 game streak of making at least one three-pointer.  Dec. 30, 1999 at Central Arkansas is the last time Northeastern State without making a trey.
  • The RiverHawks are entering their tenth season as members of the MIAA and 25th season as an NCAA Division II program.  
  • In October, Northeastern State was picked to finish in 11th place in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Polls.

About Newman

  • Nichole Ohlde-Johnson is the co-head coach for the Jets.  Johnson was a two-time Big 12 player of the Year from Kansas State and was drafted sixth overall in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx.  
  • Newman did not play Thursday evening, with their game against Rogers State being rescheduled due to COVID protocols within the Hillcats.
  • The Jets have not won a game this season against a D2 foe with their last five losses being by double-digits.
  • This season, scoring has been an issue for the Jets with 58 points per game; they are last in the MIAA and among the bottom 50 nationally.   Tiffany Dortland, a transfer from Barton Community College, leads the team with 10.2 points per game.   Dortland is ranked eighth in the MIAA in field goal attempts and tenth in steals.  Against MIAA programs, the Jets are averaging 48.8 points while allowing 72.3.

Last Time They Met

  • The RiverHawks out-rebounded the Jets by 20 with Zaria Collins having 24 points and a career high 17 rebounds.
  • The teams exchanged leads until the 2:39 mark in the third quarter when NSU led by one, 48-47. The RiverHawks then went on a 16-4 run to take control.
