WICHITA, Kan. – Behind a career game from freshman
Ashton Hackler, Northeastern State withstood a fourth-quarter run from Newman but picked up a 67-57 road win Saturday.
The MIAA victory is the first of the season for the RiverHawks, snapping a seven-game skid moving to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA.
Hackler was 6-for-9 from the field, landing three treys, good for a team-high 18 points. After missing Thursday's game in Edmond,
Zaria Collins paced the NSU bench with 15 points. In her first start of the season,
Tess Talo Tomokino turned in a career-high nine points and seven rebounds.
Morgan Lee had seven, and
Courtney Lee pulled down seven boards with five points.
The RiverHawks shot 42.6-percent (23-54), making 7-for-17 at the arc; they out-rebounded the Jets by one with 37 as a team.
After holding onto a three-point advantage out of the first stanza, behind an 11 point half from Hacker, NSU scored ten unanswered on the Jets to take a 31-21 lead with 1:45 remaining. In the second quarter, free throws aided Newman, who shot 2-for-11 from the field, connected on 11 free throws to nip at NSU, taking a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
Northeastern State took a baker's dozen lead into the fourth quarter, but the Jets would push the issue in the closing minutes on a 12-6 run to pull within three, 57-54, with 3:32 left in regulation. The RiverHawks followed up with back-to-back layups from Collins, and
Courtney Lee extended the lead by out to seven with 2:33 left. Newman finished the game 1-for-5 as the RiverHawks iced things at the free-throw line.
Newman falls to 2-12 overall and is 0-8 in MIAA play.
The RiverHawks will return home to host Missouri Southern on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
