The Setup

  • Northeastern State will face UT-Tyler for the first time in program history Saturday.
  • The RiverHawks are looking for their fifth consecutive non-conference road win. 
  • NSU opens the season with five consecutive home games. It's the longest span to start the year as NCAA D-II members.
  • Yes, it's one game, but the RiverHawks lead the nation in 12 statistical categories.

Last Time Out

  • The RiverHawks were blistering hot and leveled Bacone, 128-42, Wednesday night in their season opener.
  • Northeastern State's scoring effort was the fourth most in school history and sixth highest across NCAA college basketball this season. 
  • Fifth-year senior Rashad Perkins led the way with 28 points and opened the game by sinking his first ten consecutive shots.   Northeastern State didn't miss many opportunities and was 65.5-percent (55-84) on the floor; it was their best effort since Jan. 2019.
  • Wednesday's point total for the RiverHawks is a facility high for the NSU Event Center, breaking a four-year record that the women's program held.  The NSU men's previous best was 118 vs. Central Christian on Nov. 30, 2019.
  • Northeastern State shared the ball with 38 assists, a program best as an NCAA D-II member.

Player Storylines

  • Rashad Perkins leads the RiverHawks with 28 points, he sank his first ten attempts from the field against Bacone. At Missouri Western last season, his 40 points were the most for an NSU men's basketball player since 2014 and tied for the most in the game this season in the MIAA.  Perkins scored his 1,000 overall career point on Jan. 29, 2022 at Missouri Southern. 
  • Tylor Arnold is Northeastern State's most seasoned player in NCAA experience, with 105 games played between NSU and East Central.   He scored his 1,000 NCAA Division II point on Feb. 3, 2022 against Emporia State.
  • Christian Cook recorded his ninth career 20-point performance against Bacone and has landed 84 three-pointers in 52 games played. 
  • In his debut, Anthony Allen scored 18 points off the bench and seven rebounds for the RiverHawks.  The Broken Arrow High School product had 12 points in the final six minutes of Wednesday's contest.
  • Jaxon Jones dished out a career-high 11 assists against Bacone.  The RiverHawks are 7-2 in the last 11 games when Jones plays at least 20 minutes. 
  • This will be the second season Northeastern State has brothers Jake Gendron and Ryan Gendron on their roster.

Team Storylines

  • The RiverHawks return nine from last season with four starters coming back. 
  • Northeastern State has its season opener altered in two of the last three seasons.
  • Northeastern State was ranked inside the top-25 in NCAA-DII men's basketball attendance during the 2021-22 season. 
  • The RiverHawks has made a three-pointer in 127 consecutive games.  Feb. 2, 2017 against Southwest Baptist is the last time NSU did not make a three.
  • The 2022-23 season is the 95th for men's basketball at Northeastern State.
  • The RiverHawks are entering their 11th season as members of the MIAA and 26th season as an NCAA Division II program.

About UT Tyler

  • UT Tyler shot well from beyond the arc all night and held Arkansas Tech scoreless for a key five-minute stretch late in the second half to win 56-49 on Thursday evening.
  • The Patriots were picked ninth in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll. 
  • Senior Milan Szabo of UT Tyler men's basketball was named a Preseason Player to Watch by the Lone Star Conference.
