TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Nov. 25, 2022) – After a sluggish start, Northeastern State build a big lead with a 34-point second quarter and cruised to an 81-58 win over Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.) on Friday on Native American Heritage Night at the NSU Event Center.
Courtney Lee posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and fellow sophomore
Ashton Hackler added 18 points for NSU (3-1), which is unbeaten at home this season.
Haskell (4-9), which competes in the NAIA and was playing its fifth game in an eight-day stretch, was within 13-9 after the first quarter. But NSU started the second quarter with an 8-0 burst highlighted by 3-pointers by
Mika Scott and
Bri Wietelman to extend its lead to 21-9.
The RiverHawks' lead remained in double digits the rest of the way. When Lee made two free throws with 1:45 left in the quarter, NSU led 42-17 and her driving layup in the final seconds before halftime made it 47-19.
Haskell came no closer than 20 points in the second half. Marilyn Goodman led the Fightin' Indians with 14 points while Mahpiya Irving added 13. Haskell shot 42.2 percent from the field (19 of 45) and committed 24 turnovers.
Wietelman scored 10 points for the RiverHawks, who shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56). Lee hit 8 of her 10 shots and all five of her free-throw attempts.
Haskell was NSU's final nonconference opponent of the basketball season. The RiverHawks will open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play on Monday by hosting Washburn (Kan.).
