The Setup

  • Northeastern State faces three teams ranked in the top-25 this week, starting with (6/5) Fort Hays on Monday afternoon.  The contest is a make-up from Jan. 1, which was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols for NSU.   Northeastern State faces Fort Hays again on Saturday in Kansas, with a trip to Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday.

Last Time Out

Washburn 61, at Northeastern State 50 | February 5, 2022 | Tahlequah 
  • A cool shooting game for Northeastern State led to a 61-50 loss Saturday to Washburn. 
  • The RiverHawks shot 30.2-percent (16-53) from the field, its lowest of the season, as they slipped to 4-17 (2-13 MIAA).
  • Maleeah Langstaff paced the RiverHawks for the 12th time this season with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Ashton Hackler scored 13 and led the team with three treys on the day. 

Storylines

  • Maleeah Langstaff is among the top-100 in the nation in 12 statistical categories this season and is second in the MIAA, shooting 52.4-percent from the field.  The senior is among the MIAA leaders with 6.7 defensive rebounds per game and third in the association with 9.5 rebounds per game.  This season, Langstaff has eight double-double games and is only player in the MIAA with a triple-double.
  • Zaria Collins came off the bench on Thursday and recorded her seventh career doube-double and 32nd career game with at-least ten points. 
  • Morgan Lee leads the RiverHawks with 96 games played with 64 starts.  Against Bacone this season, Lee had a career-high seven steals which was tied for 12-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball.   Her twin-sister Maegan Lee is third on the NSU roster averaging 9.0 points per game this season.  The RiverHawks have a third Lee in true-freshman Courtney Lee, who is not related to the Lee Twins and has seen the floor in 20 games.
  • Ashton Hackler has started the last 11 games and has scored at-least ten points in nine games during her true-freshman season. 
  • After missing the first six games due to injury, true-freshman Jaylee Kindred made her career debut at Northwest Missouri and her first start at Central Oklahoma.  Kailyn Lay started and made her NSU debut against Pittsburg State on Dec. 12; she is seventh in MIAA play with 3.2 assists per game. 
  • Northeastern State's 62 team rebounds against Bacone is an MIAA high tied for 17th-most in NCAA Division II women's basketball this season.
  • NSU has a 634 game streak of making at least one three-pointer.  Dec. 30, 1999, at Central Arkansas is the last time Northeastern State without making a trey.
  • The RiverHawks are entering their tenth season as members of the MIAA and 25th season as an NCAA Division II program.

About Fort Hays State

  • At the holiday break, the Tigers were one of 31 remaining one loss teams in NCAA Division II women's basketball.
  • Katie Wagner leads the Tigers in scoring with 15.5 points and having 8.7 rebounds per game.  She is sixth in the MIAA with 6.3 defensive rebounds per game and is shooting 80.7-percent at the free-throw line.
  • Fort Hays State has won 11 consecutive regular-season games and have not lost a game in Oklahoma since Feb. 10, 2018 (Central Oklahoma, 72-70).
  • For two weeks, the Tigers held the number-1 ranking in the National Coaches' Poll and have been ranked in the top-10 since Feb. 9, 2021.  They have qualified for the last four NCAA Tournaments in the postseason and claimed the MIAA Regular Season Championship this last spring.

Last Time They Met

Fort Hays State 70, Northeastern State 58 | February 13, 2021 | Tahlequah, Okla.
  • Northeastern State was within five points of the Tigers with under five minutes left  but an 11-2 run by Fort Hays State would aid to their 16th win of the season.
  • The RiverHawks had three starters in double figures with Morgan Lee shooting a perfect 5-for-5 and was 4-for-4 at the arc for a 16 point game.
  • The lead changed seven times and was tied four times.
  • Fort Hays State controlled the paint outscoring the RiverHawks 42-to-20.

  • Including the second game against Washburn later in the season, the two teams will meet seven straight times in February. 
  • Northeastern State has not won consecutive home games against Washburn.
