TAHLEQUAH –
Brock Reller hit a two-out single to right field to cap a four-run come from behind slugfest win for the RiverHawks over Washburn, 24-23, Sunday afternoon in ten innings.
In a game that lasted nearly five hours, Northeastern State's run total is the highest since March 14, 2016 (24 at Lincoln), and the most at home since scoring 23 against Washburn on April 26, 2014.
Reller had a five-RBI game and was 3-for-3 at the plate, hitting his ninth homer of the season in the second inning.
Collin Klingensmith walked three times and had a five-RBI game, with a home run in the fifth.
Blaze Brothers,
Matt Kaiser, and
Brayden Rodden all hit a homer in the game.
NSU's five home runs are the most since April 27, 2021, where they blasted six against Southern Nazarene.
The RiverHawks would cough up a 20-18 lead with a two-run blast in the ninth and had the winning run on third with no outs in the bottom half of the inning. Washburn worked their way out of the jam with a strikeout, infield out, and NSU would be called on interference in what would have been a walk-off single from Rodden.
The Ichabods would go ahead in the tenth hitting their seventh homer to plate three runs to take a 23-20 lead.
Washburn's bullpen wouldn't get the job done in the bottom frame allowing three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Klingensmith scored one off a hit-by-pitch, and
Tucker Dunlap drew an RBI walk to get NSU within one and no outs.
With the bases loaded, NSU's next batters went down swinging to send Reller up the plate. The fifth-year senior hit a 2-2 pitch through the right side, scoring
Lucas McCain and Klingensmith as the winning run.
The RiverHawks used six arms with
Cohen Bell (1-0), earning the win. Washburn, who came into the series on an eight-game winning streak, used nine pitchers and dropped the season series to fall to 15-6, 6-2 MIAA.
Northeastern State improves to 15-6 (5-3 MIAA) will look for the series sweep on Monday at noon.
