Ninth inning rally comes up short for NSU

TAHLEQUAH – A late rally by Northeastern State fell short as Pittsburg State took the second game of the series 11-10 on Saturday afternoon.

Collin Klingensmith had a three-hit, three-RBI game and represented the tying run in the ninth for the RiverHawks as they slip to 16-9 (6-6 MIAA).

The Gorillas (15-8, 10-2 MIAA) hit four home runs and had 19 hits to split the season series.

Both teams hit solo homers in the second, with Brayden Rodden smashing this fourth moon shot of the season over the right-field scoreboard.

The Gorillas took the lead back, scoring one on a double to right-center on a fielder's choice.  In the third, Pitt hit their second homer of the game to right-center extending their lead to 5-1.

NSU would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a single off the bat of Klingensmith.

Brock Reller pulled NSU back within one on his 11th home run of the season, scoring Kademon Graff.

Pitt State grabbed a run back leading the sixth off with a solo homer to left.   The Gorillas would add one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings before the RiverHawks tied things up with a four-run frame.  Tucker Dunlap hit a pinch-hit a two-run homer and Blaze Brothers tied the game with a solo shot to left-center.

In the ninth, the Gorillas picked up the go-ahead run on a sac fly and got a pair of insurance runs on a blast to right field.

The RiverHawks played to the last out, and Rodden picked up a ground out RBI before Klingensmith hit an RBI triple to the center-field fence to get back within one.  With winning run now at home with but with two outs, NSU would strikeout swinging to end the game.

Lee Callison started the game going four innings; Trey Havens tossed three, Dakodah Jones (0-1) would be charged for the loss.

The series wraps up on Sunday at 1 p.m.
