TOPEKA, Kan. – Northeastern State suffered setbacks Sunday at Washburn and was shutout 3-0 in game one while being walked off 3-2 in extra innings.
Sydney Balderrama broke up an Ichabod no-hit bid with two-outs remaining in the seventh with a single; she was one of two batters to reach base.
Washburn (38-11, 20-2 MIAA) plated a run in the second and added two in the fourth inning.
Gail Young (9-9) scattered seven hits and struck out two batters.
Miscues proved costly for the RiverHawks in the nightcap, with all three of Washburn's runs coming unearned.
An infield error in the second allowed two runs to come home. In the fourth, NSU got a run back on a pair of doubles to start the frame.
Jaeden Rosenquist recorded the RBI to bring in
Addy Wolfe.
Down to their final two outs in the seventh,
Delaney Mills knocked in a single, and
Rhomie Bradshaw hit NSU's third double to put two runners in scoring position.
Alyssia Crick followed them up and made contact with the first pitch for the sac fly to tie the game.
In the eighth, Washburn hit back-to-back singles, and then NSU loaded the bases with a walk to get a force out. The RiverHawks would get a batter to strike out swinging, but the ball would get away, and the Ichabods scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Northeastern State out-hit Washburn 8-to-6, with Bradshaw and Mills collecting two.
Savannah Evans (8-10) struck out eight batters and forced 13 ground ball outs in the loss.
The RiverHawks fall to 23-22 overall with the loss and are 11-9 in the MIAA. They will head to Emporia State Monday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
NOTE: Due to the rescheduling of this weekend's games, NSU's home contests with Southern Nazarene Tuesday have been canceled.
