Women's Soccer visits Ouachita Thursday, hosts SWOSU

TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State opens its 27th season of women's soccer Thursday, visiting Ouachita Baptist for the tenth time.  The match marks the beginning of the regular season for both teams, with head coach Chase Wooten entering his 12th season as head coach of the RiverHawks.

What's with the time Thursday?
The early kickoff is due to the lack of lights at Kluck Field and Ouachita having a doubleheader that afternoon with its men's team hosting Christian Brothers following NSU's match.  

History with the Tigers
The RiverHawks are 15-3-1 against OBU and 9-0-1 at home when facing the Tigers.  Northeastern State has won ten consecutive matches and has not allowed more than one goal in the last 11 meetings.  Of the 19 contests with Ouachita Baptist, Northeastern State has pitched a shutout in nine of them. 

Scouting the Tigers
  • OBU finished the 2021 season with a 9-7-2 mark and was 6-5-1 in Great American Conference play. 
  • Ouachita returned ten starters from last season's squad and was picked to finish in second place in the GAC Preseason Poll, earning a pair of first-place votes. 
  • Goalkeeper Michele Snow was ranked seventh in the nation in saves and 17th in save percentage.

History with the Bulldogs
Northeastern State and Southwestern Oklahoma have played soccer against each other since 1998 with the RiverHawks leading the series 8-6-1.  Southwestern has not visited Tahlequah since both were members of the Lone Star Conference in 2011.  In seven meetings at NSU, the series is 3-3-1 overall. 

Scouting the Bulldogs
  • Southwestern is the preseason favorite to win this year's GAC title and had five first-place votes.  The Bulldogs finished 13-7-1 overall last season and 10-1-1 in conference play, claiming their fifth regular season title. 
  • Southwestern qualified for the NCAA postseason for the fourth time in 2021 and was the No. 8 seed in the Central Region.  They lost top-seeded Central Missouri, 1-nil, and opens the 2022 season in Warrensburg Thursday with UCM.
  • Head Coach Mark Persson is in his 14th season at Southwestern Oklahoma and has faced the RiverHawks and a Wooten-led team three times and is 2-0-1 against Northeastern State.
