Hernandez leads RiverHawks to fourth

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Aitana Hernandez fired off an even-par 72 and recorded her 21st career top-10 finish Wednesday.   But a mere four-over-par on their second tour through the Adams Point Golf Club wasn't enough as Northeastern State slipped one spot on the leaderboard to finish in fourth place, carding a 590 (298-292).

Hernandez was four strikes back of the leader, tied for eighth place, carding a 145 (73-72).  The senior nailed four birdies and shot a one-under on the back-nine.

The RiverHawks were second overall in the 16-team field with 114 pars and third, landing 22 birdies.

Henderson State blistered the field, shooting a seven-under, 281 score, and won the tournament by nine strokes (573) over Nebraska-Kearney.

"Scoring conditions were perfect, and the course was easy from tee to green, and it became a putting contest," said head coach Scott Varner.  "It didn't really reward good ball striking; we are a good ball striking team."

True-freshman Hanna Lignell placed 12th shooting a 146 (74-72).  Her finish is the best tournament debut by an NSU freshman golfer since Hernandez placed, tied for sixth in the same event in 2018.

Nina Lee shot a 149 (75-74) through the two days and was tied for 18th place.  Yasmin Hang was one stroke back (76-74) and tied for 22nd place.

Kelly Swanson carded a 161 (82-79) and finished tied for 53rd.

Nebraska-Kearney's Faviola Gonzalez and Arkansas-Monticello's Chiara Sturaro took medalist honors with a 141.

The RiverHawks return to action Monday when they will host its 23rd Golf Classic.
