HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State scored twice in the opening 45 minutes and shutout No. 24 Northeastern State 2-0 on Thursday.
NSU secured 12 shots for themselves but allowed 19 attempts to FHSU. While a rate of RiverHawk tries were on-target (4-of-12, 33.3%), the Tigers had one more shot on-goal for the match (5-of-19).
The night stayed scoreless until the 22nd minute when FHSU secured the 1-0 advantage off an assisted goal. They struck again just under 15 minutes later in the 37th minute, giving themselves a 2-0 lead. Ultimately, the RiverHawks couldn't counter either of their makes, leading to NSU's four shutout loss of the season and their third in GAC/MIAA play.
Ben Mings,
Miguel Carrasquinho, and
Mung Mang registered two shots each, while Carrasquinho and Mang, as well as
Donovan Aparicio and
Nicolas Falcao, accounted for NSU's four shots on-goal.
The result places Northeastern State at 6-5-3 (4-4-1 GAC/MIAA), while Fort Hays State moved to 7-6-2 (6-2-2 GAC/MIAA).
With the defeat at Hays and Harding's win over Rogers State, the RiverHawks remain in fourth in the GAC/MIAA standings but are just one point above the cut-line with 13 points to HU's 12. NSU's next opponent, Newman, isn't far behind in sixth with ten.
Three games remain for NSU in the regular season, with the RiverHawks returning to DeLoache Field Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. to face Newman in conference action.
