Cold fourth-quarter sinks RiverHawks in MIAA opener

TAHLEQUAH – A run of 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter by No. 22 Fort Hays State dashed Northeastern State of an upset bid 63-52 in their MIAA opener on Thursday evening. 

The RiverHawks (3-1, 0-1 MIAA) held a 43-37 lead in the game's final stanza before they committed seven turnovers allowing the Tigers to run past them.   Northeastern State had 20 miscues on the night and was hammered on the offensive glass with Fort Hays State grabbing 13 and having 12 additional possessions. 

After scoring just eight points in the third quarter, Fort Hays State (5-0, 1-0 MIAA) dropped 26 in the final ten minutes on NSU.  Jessie Sallach paced the Tigers with 18 points off the bench as they won their third consecutive against the RiverHawks. 

Courtney Lee led the RiverHawks with 18 points but was limited to just nine shot attempts.  Halie Jones added 14 and Tor'e Alford put up eight.   The RiverHawks shot 16-for-41 on the floor and were limited to four made triples.

Northeastern State turns around and will host Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. inside the NSU Event Center.
