HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Northeastern State stumbled out of the gates Friday, dropping a 13-11 contest to Arkansas-Monticello, and was limited to a pair of hits in a 7-0 shutout to Northwestern Oklahoma.
Trailing 11-3, UAM scored 11 unanswered runs in the final three innings to rally past the RiverHawks in the season opener. An NSU defensive miscue allowed for a three-run go-ahead homer with two outs in the sixth, capping the late rally by Arkansas-Monticello.
Baylea Smith homered and had a four-RBI game in her debut, and
Raegan Edwards also hit a homer and had three-RBI.
Addy Wolfe had three of the team's 11 hits and brought two runners home.
Chloe Bohuslavicky (0-1) walked twice and was charged with the loss in relief.
In the nightcap, NSU had a runner in scoring position once and left six runners on base in the shoutout by the Rangers.
Northwestern Oklahoma scored five runs on five hits in the second inning and plated a pair of runs in the sixth.
Madison Heinle (0-1) struck out five batters and had a complete game.
Northeastern State will return to action Saturday, playing at Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
