Suiaunoa picks up NCAA win No. 100 as RiverHawks rout Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. (Feb. 4, 2023) – Northeastern State never trailed and coach Fala Suiaunoa recorded her 100th career win at a NCAA institution as the RiverHawks rolled past Rogers State 72-48 on Saturday afternoon inside the Claremore Expo Center.

Ashton Hackler scored 20 points – going 4 of 10 from 3-point range – as NSU (6-14, 3-13 MIAA) ended a seven-game losing streak with a much-needed win as the RiverHawks battle for a potential spot in the MIAA postseason basketball tournament.

With six games remaining, NSU trails Central Oklahoma by a half-game for what would be the tournament's final berth.

Saturday's win also avenged NSU's 54-45 loss to Rogers State (4-18, 2-14) on Dec. 17 in Tahlequah. The Hillcats entered the game having won five of their last six against NSU. The RiverHawks recorded their second-largest margin of victory this season, surpassed only by an 87-41 win over Kansas Christian in the season opener on Nov. 16.

Suiaunoa coached for four seasons at NCAA Division II Armstrong State before spending the past six seasons at NSU.

NSU took the lead 23 seconds into Saturday's game and lost it only once, when the Hillcats tied the game at 9-9. Mika Scott's jumper with 2:17 left in the first quarter put the RiverHawks back ahead and Courtney Lee followed with another basket and NSU was up 15-12 by the quarter's end.

The RiverHawks led 36-28 at halftime and essentially put the game away by starting the second half with a 9-0 run. Rogers State came no closer than 12 points the rest of the way and NSU's lead ballooned to as many as 24 points down the stretch.

Hackler recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance. Jaylee Kindred scored 14 points for NSU and Tess Talo Tomokino added 13. NSU hit an impressive 20 of 23 from the free-throw line (87 percent) and made 23 of 53 field-goal attempts (43.4 percent).

Kamryn Estell and Bailey Kliewer each scored 13 points for the Hillcats, who shot 36.7 percent (18 of 49) from the field.

NSU will host Missouri Western on Thursday and Northwest Missouri State on Saturday.
