Women's Tennis finishes ITA Central Regional

EDMOND – Sandra Mari Marti reached the ITA Central Region Round of 16 and the "B" Draw Doubles Finals to highlight Northeastern State's weekend in Edmond. 

Northeastern State won 12 individual singles matches and five doubles matches in the three-day competition.

Mari Marti beat players from Emporia State and Central Oklahoma Friday to advance to the Round of 16.  The sophomore would win her first set 6-3 but was knocked out 6-3, 10-8 by Augustana's Florentia Hadjigeorgiou.

Alisha Moldakhmetova and Valeria Teran advanced through the main draw with Mari Marti but were eliminated in their Friday nightcaps. 

Flight B singles had NSU with two players in the quarterfinals and winning eight matches between Leah Gonzales-Edwards and Andrea Vargas.  

Vargas played into Saturday with three wins before falling to Harding 6-2, 6-2. Gonzales-Edwards advanced to the finals and lost to Central Oklahoma in three sets. 

In doubles,  Moldakhmetova and Tegan Heaton won their main draw opener but fell 8-3 in Saturday's second round. Gonzales-Edwards and Teran were eliminated in the main draw opener but reached the consolation semifinals.

Mari Marti and Vargas beat players from Augustana and Arkansas Tech on Saturday to move to the "B" Draw semifinals.  The pair won a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4) on Sunday before falling 8-4 to Washburn in the finals. 

The RiverHawks close out their fall on Oct. 6-7 with an invitational hosted by Midwestern State-Texas.
