Team effort leads RiverHawks to road win

WICHITA, Kan. – Anthony Allen's 17 points led the way for Northeastern State (6-9, 1-8 MIAA) as they claimed their first conference win of the season in a 74-68 triumph against Newman (6-9, 3-6 MIAA) Saturday inside Fugate Gymnasium.

The RiverHawks took an early lead and spent over 17 minutes of the opening half in control, guided by a 53.8% (14-of-26) shooting period and assisted by a less explosive first 20 minutes from the hosts, who landed three less makes on as many tries (11-of-26, 42.3%).

The Jets overcame an even less efficient clip in the next frame at 13-of-32 (40.6%) to maintain an even scoring half with the RiverHawks, but after a brief stint with the lead within the first six minutes of the half, they never held the advantage again.

Northeastern State's 54.7% (29-of-53) performance across the meeting marked the sixth time this season the team has shot at or over 50% and is the third occurrence in their last five matchups.

Anthony Allen led the way with 17 points, pacing a group of NSU players that consisted of four entering double figures and six scoring at least nine.

Meanwhile, Jaxon Jones had eight rebounds, leading a rebounding unit that finished the game with their best margin on the glass against an MIAA opponent this season (+9, 36-to-27).

Northeastern State returns to play a brief two-game homestand, starting with Central Missouri on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Event Center.
