TULSA -- Retired head men's basketball coach Ken Hayes will be honored at an upcoming exhibition game for Northeastern State, which will be played at the University of Tulsa on Nov. 4 in the Reynolds Center. The game will serve as the regular season opener for Golden Hurricane, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
A 1956 and 1959 graduate of Northeastern State, Hayes coached at both institutions and won 391 games in his years at NSU, Oral Roberts, and Tulsa. Following his retirement from coaching, Hayes was inducted into the Northeastern State Hall of Fame in 1999 and Tulsa Hall of Fame in 2008.
Hayes spent seven seasons from 1968-75 as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Tulsa, recording a winning record in each campaign. He finished his Tulsa coaching career with a 117-68 record.
After four-year stints at New Mexico State and Oral Roberts, Hayes was named head coach at NSU before the 1983-84 season and quickly ascended the program to one of the top teams in the nation. In his second season, Northeastern State won its first 14 contests and was ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in nearly 20 years. He won 224 as head coach for NSU earning NAIA District VI Coach of the Year honors and winning an Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference title.
