Trey Phipps scored 25 points in his debut, and
Keon Edwards recorded a double-double, but turnovers plagued Northeastern State in a 90-86 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma on Friday evening. The RiverHawks surrendered an 18-point second-half lead, with the Rangers having 29 points off NSU miscues in their season opener.
Northwestern (1-0) did not lead in the second half until a steal with 19 seconds remaining in the game put them up at the free-throw line. The Rangers would make both to take a two-point lead, and in the ensuing NSU possession, Northwest recorded its 13th steal of the evening and iced the contest with two more free throws.
Phipps shot 8-for-11 from the field and had four assists, while Edwards had 16 points and ten rebounds.
Ethan Blackmon scored 17 off the bench, and
Taven Washington scored 11.
Jaxon Jones grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists.
The RiverHawks controlled the glass 37-to-28 over the Rangers who had two players with over 30 points. Pittsburg State transfer Max Alexander paced Northwestern with 34 points in his debut.
Northeastern State (0-1) shot 29-for-63 but made 11 shots in the second half. They will look to even their weekend in Edmond on Saturday, where they will see UMary (N.D.) at 2:30 p.m.
