Women's Soccer opens season on Friday

TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State opens its 29th season of women's soccer on Friday, traveling to Ouachita Baptist.  The match marks the beginning of the regular season for both teams, with head coach Chase Wooten entering his 14th season as head coach of the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks were picked to finish in eighth place in the MIAA and return its top three scorers from last season.  Sydney Taylor paced NSU with nine goals and 21 points during her sophomore season. 

In season openers, Northeastern State has seen just one setback in its previous eight matches and has not lost a home opener since 2011.

History with the Tigers
- The RiverHawks are 16-3-2 against OBU and 7-3 when facing the Tigers on the road.  Northeastern State has not lost a match since 2007 to the Tigers and has not allowed more than one goal in the last 14 meetings.  Of the 21 contests with Ouachita Baptist, Northeastern State has pitched a shutout in 10 of them. The Tigers are a regular non-conference opponent for the RiverHawks, as the two teams have met in every season since 2010, except the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Scouting the Tigers
- OBU finished the 2023 season with an 11-3-7 mark and was 6-2-4 in Great American Conference play.  The Tigers won last season's GAC Tournament title and earned a NCAA Postseason bid.
- Ouachita Baptist is the preseason favorite to win the GAC and return six All-GAC performers from last season.

History with the Lady Bison
- Sunday will be the 25th meeting between the two programs, with the RiverHawks winning 10 of the last 11 against Harding.  In Tahlequah, Northeastern State is 12-0-1 when facing Harding.

Scouting the Lady Bison
- Harding was picked tied for fifth place in the GAC Preseason Poll after going 4-8-6 (2-5-5 GAC) last season. 
- The Lady Bison open their season on Thursday against Union (Tenn.) and return Whitney Thomas who had five goals last season.
