Northeastern State Falls to Newman in Nail-Biter, 76-73

WICHITA, Kan. -- Cold shooting in the final minutes proved to be fatal for Northeastern State, as the RiverHawks fell 76-73 to Newman in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) matchup Saturday at Fugate Gymnasium.

Ethan Blackmon led the RiverHawks (11-7, 5-4 MIAA) with 20 points and seven rebounds, connecting on nine of his 14 shot attempts.  Trey Phipps added 16 points, including two three-pointers, while Jaxon Jones chipped in 13 points and four rebounds.  Taven Washington had 11 points off the bench and six rebounds.

Neither team led by more than seven points with Newman leading for over 28 minutes.  In the final 60 seconds of the contest, the RiverHawks missed four opportunities to cut the Newman lead to one or tie the game.  Adding to NSU's woes, they went the 5:43 of the game shooting 1-for-9 from the field.

The RiverHawks struggled to capitalize from beyond the arc, shooting a season-low 5-of-23 (21.7%).  Turnovers also played a factor on Saturday, with NSU committing 17, their season-high of 20 came at home against the same Newman squad.

The Jets (12-7, 5-5 MIAA) were led by Sam Somerhalder, who posted 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Jordan Glenn-Hawkins and Boston Stanton III combined for 21 points.

Northeastern State will regroup inside the NSU Event Center on Thursday as it prepares for its next MIAA matchup against Pittsburg State.
