WICHITA, Kan. -- Northeastern State survived a hard-fought battle on the road, edging out a narrow 74-72 victory over Newman University in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) matchup Saturday at Fugate Gymnasium.
The RiverHawks (9-9, 5-4 MIAA) overcame a 14-point deficit, gaining momentum late in the second period and into the third. During that stretch, NSU unleashed a 21-4 run while the Jets missed eight consecutive shot attempts.
Courtney Lee led the RiverHawks with 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. The senior reached a career milestone in the fourth quarter by collecting her 500th rebound. Alex Hill and Deyanna Douglas contributed 11 points each, while Brennan Kirchhoff added 10.
The game was a foul-heavy contest, with 55 fouls called between the two teams, just two shy of NSU's season-high. The third quarter alone saw 21 fouls, during which NSU outscored Newman 25-16. Despite shooting just 37 percent from the field, the RiverHawks capitalized on Newman's mistakes, outscoring the Jets 27-11 in points off turnovers.
Newman (6-13, 1-9 MIAA) was led by Jaeden McMillin, who posted a double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds.
With the win, the RiverHawks extended their winning streak against the Jets to four games and have now won four of their last five MIAA contests. NSU will aim to carry this momentum into their next matchup at home on Thursday against Pittsburg State.
