ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Charlea Cochran plated four runs as Northeastern State split its opening day falling to hosts Henderson State 4-3 and out-slugging Missouri S&T 10-6 in the nightcap on Friday.
The RiverHawks (1-1) scored runs on the Miners in all but the third inning as they had 15 hits, their most in over a season. Cochran singled in her first three at-bats and scored the go-ahead runs in the fourth inning.
Brynn Burchfield batted 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Korynn Tindel hit her second career homer in the sixth and had a two-hit game.
Braedyn Sheofee (1-0) won in her debut, going 3 1/3 innings of relief while striking out four batters.
In the opener, Northeastern State could not hold onto a three-run lead as Henderson State plated two in the fourth and sixth innings. All three of NSU's runs came in the third with Macie Sawney hitting a single up the middle to score two. Raegan Moore doubled later in the inning to score Sawney from third.
The RiverHawks were able to threaten late and put a pair of runners on in the seventh but the game ended on a line-out double play.
Henderson State (1-1) outhit the RiverHawks 10-to-7 with Sawney having two from the lead-off spot. Gracie Turner went 3 2/3 innings in her first start at NSU. Madison Heinle (0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.
Northeastern State returns to action on Saturday to face Christian Brothers at 11 a.m., that game along with the nightcap at 3 p.m. is hosted by Ouachita Baptist.
