WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Northeastern State clamped down defensively and left town with history in its pocket, beating Southwestern Oklahoma State 63–44 on Saturday for the RiverHawks' first win in Weatherford since 2012.
NSU (2–0) held the Bulldogs to just 44 points — the fewest a RiverHawks squad has allowed against SWOSU (1-1) since 2009 — while forcing 18 turnovers and limiting SWOSU to one made 3-pointer.
In the second and third frames, the RiverHawks flexed every defensive muscle they had, outscoring Southwestern Oklahoma 38–17. Northeastern State piled up 20 points in the second and 18 in the third, while SWOSU managed just 8 and 9, respectively.
Annaston Brown led Northeastern State with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four 3-pointers, while
Gabrielle Tilley added 13. The RiverHawks dominated the glass 44–35 and outscored the Bulldogs 37–12 in bench points.
The game was whistle-heavy throughout, with NSU whistled for 26 fouls and SWOSU for 28.
Northeastern State returns home for its opener on Tuesday, hosting Ouachita Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
