NSU Puts Jets in a Holding Pattern in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. -- Northeastern State never trailed for the second straight game and rolled past Newman 74-49 on Thursday night, securing its fifth consecutive win over the Jets and the program's largest margin of victory in Wichita.

The RiverHawks (8-1, 2-0 MIAA) opened with a dominant 19-5 first quarter and kept Newman off balance throughout, forcing 22 turnovers and turning them into 23 points. Northeastern State also leaned on its depth, outscoring the Jets 36-22 in bench production.

Annaston Brown led NSU with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a pair of threes, while Reese Shirey added 11 points and three assists. McKenzie Smith scored 12 and went 6-for-7 at the free-throw line, and Deyanna Douglas contributed nine points and five boards. The RiverHawks knocked down nine 3-pointers and held Newman to 31 percent shooting.

NSU stretched its lead to 41-16 by halftime after a 22-point second quarter highlighted by Brown's scoring burst. The RiverHawks' defensive pressure never relented, allowing only 16 points in the first half and limiting the Jets to single digits in two of the first three periods.

Newman (3-4, 0-1) was paced by Jaeden McMillin's eight points. No Jets player reached double figures.

Northeastern State returns home on Dec. 15 to host Bethany at 1 p.m. as it looks to continue its momentum before the holiday break.
