DURANT, Okla. – Northeastern State dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader Monday at Southeastern Oklahoma, falling 9-1 in the opener before a walk-off home run handed the RiverHawks a 4-1 loss in game two.
The doubleheader was moved up two days due to impending weather across eastern Oklahoma.
In game one, the Savage Storm (7-6) took control early, scoring a run in the first before erupting for an eight-run second inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. Southeastern out-hit NSU 12-3, using three extra-base hits to put the game out of reach.
Madison Heinle went 2-for-2 for the RiverHawks (5-9), while
Maddie Messenger provided the only offensive spark with her third home run of the season.
The nightcap was a tightly contested pitchers' duel until the fifth inning, when Southeastern broke the scoreless tie with a two-out RBI double. Messenger gave NSU life in the seventh, leading off with a double before
Aubree Vickrey drove her in to tie the game at 1-1.
However, the Savage Storm delivered in the clutch, belting a walk-off three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep.
Heinle recorded two of NSU's five hits and took the loss in the circle.
Northeastern State will look to bounce back when it hosts Southeastern Oklahoma for a rematch on March 4 at noon.
