Baseball Opens MIAA Play at Newman on Sunday

TAHLEQUAH -- Northeastern State Baseball kicks off MIAA play this weekend with a three-game series against Newman in Wichita, Kansas.

Originally set to begin Friday, the series was pushed back due to frigid weather. Instead, the RiverHawks and Jets will square off in a doubleheader on Sunday at noon, followed by a single game on Monday, also at noon.

Northeastern State (3-5) has been idle since last Saturday after its midweek matchup with Southeastern Oklahoma was postponed for a second time. Diego Murillo has been a model of consistency, reaching base in all eight games this season, while Gage Williams enters the weekend riding a three-game hitting streak. NSU's starting pitching shined last weekend against UC-Colorado Springs, racking up 24 strikeouts in four games. Braxton Jones, in two starts, has fanned 17 batters over 10 2/3 innings.

Newman (3-5) will be taking the field for the first time since Feb. 8, making this their home opener. The Jets were scheduled for a three-game series against Southwest Baptist last weekend, but it was canceled. At the plate, Trent Trammell has been on fire, hitting .588 through eight games.

NSU has had the upper hand in recent matchups, winning the last four meetings and holding a 12-5 edge in the all-time series.
