TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State continues MIAA play with a three-game series against in-state foe Rogers State to wrap up the week, playing Friday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) in Tahlequah at Rousey Field, while playing the middle game of the series in Claremore on Saturday (2 p.m.)
The RiverHawks (6-5, 3-0 MIAA) enter with wins in their last four, including three against MIAA opponent Newman to begin the week. Across the series against the Jets, the NSU bats exploded to score 40 runs with 45 base hits.
Holden Yoder collected eight hits during the series and was named MIAA Baseball Hitter of the Week on Tuesday. Yoder held an on-base percentage of .722 against the Jets and was a triple short of the cycle in Monday's 15-8 against NU. Yoder paces all NSU individuals through 11 games with a .421 batting average, alongside a team-best three home runs. His nine RBI is tied with
Diego Murillo and
Xavier Sanchez for second on the team, only behind
Gage Williams (ten). As a team, the RiverHawks own a .283 batting clip with a .404 on-base percentage (5th in MIAA) and a .443 slugging percentage.
The pitching staff has been guided by three stellar starts from freshman
Braxton Jones, who has allowed just six earned runs across 16.2 innings pitched (3.24 ERA). Jones has also struck out 27 batters in the span, the fifth-most in the MIAA so far this season.
Murphy Bostick (13.1 IP, 3.38 ERA, 14 SO) and
Gus Collins (16.0 IP, 5.63 ERA, 11 SO) have logged three starts on the mound, too. Izac Sisemore leads all NSU relievers with 11 strikeouts through 7.2 innings pitched.
The RiverHawks clash with a Rogers State team that has won eight of their first ten overall and opens MIAA play with this week's series. They enter off a 12-2 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday. As a team, the Hillcats possess a .307 batting average (2nd in MIAA) and have held opposing teams to just a .217 average (3rd in MIAA). Luis Fuentes has started all ten games so far and leads all RSU individuals with a .390 average alongside eight RBI. Weston Peninger and Andres Contreras have each homered twice in the season's opening weeks. Colton Anderson is the team's top starter, winning all three starts so far with a 1.17 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched. The 2024 All-MIAA Honorable Mention has faced NSU twice in his career in Claremore, tossing a combined nine innings with six earned runs and 11 strikeouts.
Across the all-time series, NSU has a 26-15 record against RSU, winning four of the last five. The RiverHawk bats haven't had a hard time producing runs against the Hillcats in that span, scoring at least ten in four of the last five with a high of 18 runs on Apr. 16, 2023.
Following the RSU series, Northeastern State will host Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before traveling to face Missouri Western the following weekend.
