Baseball earns first regular season win at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. -- A three-run tenth inning helped Northeastern State survive a late comeback bid from Southeastern Oklahoma State, allowing the RiverHawks to pick up their first regular season win at Mike Metheny Field for a second straight season in a 10-9 effort.

The RiverHawks (1-3) got out ahead early, scoring in each of the first four innings to take an initial 5-1 edge. After that, the Savage Storm (1-3) emerged on a responding 5-1 outburst of their own to tie the contest at six entering the ninth inning. A Holden Yoder home run at the top of the ninth gave NSU a brief one-run lead entering the bottom of the frame, but Southeastern Oklahoma stayed alive with a solo shot of their own to send the contest to extra innings.

The top of the tenth saw Northeastern explode for three base hits to start, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Diego Murillo to score Finley Bunch and Mason Ruiz. Tanner Almond would go on to score in the inning, too, after Xavier Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice with loaded bases. The visitors carried a 10-7 score to the bottom of the tenth, with the three-run deficit too much for the Savage Storm to overcome. While Southeastern successfully legged out a two-run homer with two outs, Holden Yaksick slammed the door on the hosts with a strikeout to end the game.

Almond and Yoder provided three-hit games, while Ruiz additionally homered alongside Yoder, who reached base five times with two walks drawn. Drake Sisemore started on the mound and struck out three in four innings pitched, while Yaksick led with four strikeouts and earned the win as the last arm used by NSU for the day. Cristian Hernandez (two strikeouts) and Caleb Reynolds (four batters faced) saw time in relief between Sisemore's start and Yaksick's finish.

Northeastern State has an off weekend before hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. for the home opener at Thomas C. Rousey Memorial Field.
