HAYS, Kan. -- Northeastern State saw its second-half lead slip away, falling 61-48 to Fort Hays State on Thursday night.
Ethan Blackmon and
Taven Washington paced the RiverHawks with 11 points each, while
Bryson Smith added nine. NSU struggled with ball control, committing 19 turnovers—just one shy of its season high—and was limited to a season-low 35 possessions.
After a
Jaxon Jones basket put NSU ahead 46-44 with nine minutes remaining, Fort Hays State responded with 14 unanswered points to seize control. The RiverHawks committed six turnovers down the stretch and dropped their eighth straight meeting against the Tigers.
Despite the loss, NSU won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Fort Hays State 30-26, and finished with a higher shooting percentage (45.7% to 40.7%). However, the Tigers capitalized on NSU's miscues, outscoring them 17-2 in points off turnovers.
Early foul trouble hampered
Trey Phipps, limiting him to six first-half minutes, and he finished with just four points. Jones and Smith played the full 40 minutes for the RiverHawks.
Northeastern State looks to rebound Saturday when it faces Nebraska-Kearney.
