RiverHawks swipe 13 bases and series over Washburn in 13-7 win

TAHLEQUAH — Northeastern State earned their third MIAA series win of the campaign with a 13-7 victory against Washburn at Rousey Field Sunday.

In the victory, the RiverHawks (10-11, 7-5 MIAA) claimed 13 stolen bases, the most in an MIAA baseball game for the season and the second-most in any NCAA Division II baseball game in 2025. Colton Ayres and Tanner Almond led the way with three swiped bags each, while Diego Murillo and Austin Albright added two apiece.

The Ichabods (13-11, 6-6 MIAA) got an early lead with a second-inning score, but NSU would grab five of the game's next six runs to take a 5-2 lead after three. Both sides were blanked in the fourth and fifth innings before the hosts grabbed a larger advantage with a three-run sixth (8-2).

WU would power back in the seventh with a four-score outburst to bring the contest within two runs (8-6) before NSU logged five unanswered in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to place the series-deciding contest firmly out of reach for the visitors.

Individually, Sloan Smith recorded his first career homer at NSU with a solo shot in the eighth frame, while Zach Burnes matched Ayres and Albright with two hits in the victory. Braxton Jones tossed 6.2 innings and struck out three en route to his fourth win of the season in his sixth start.

The RiverHawks match up against UAFS on Tuesday at Rousey Field, beginning at 5 p.m.
